Dongcheng District, one of the central districts of Beijing, is not known for natural mountain ranges given its location in the plain areas of Beijing. However, Dongcheng is rich in historical and cultural resources and modern urban landscapes, serving as the political, cultural, and international communication hub of Beijing.

Western Hills

Located in the western part of Beijing, the Western Hills (Xishan) are an extension of the Taihang Mountains, including famous scenic spots like Xiangshan (Fragrant Hills), Badachu, and Baiwangshan. These hills are not only picturesque but also possess a wealth of historical and cultural relics, such as the Biyun Temple in Xiangshan and Lingguang Temple in Badachu.

Yan Mountains

The Yan Mountains, situated to the north of Beijing, act as a natural barrier for the city and serve as a crucial water source. Notable tourist spots within the Yan Mountains include the Mutianyu Great Wall and Hongluo Temple, offering visitors both historical insights and natural beauty.

Yunmeng Mountain

Situated in the northeast of Beijing, Yunmeng Mountain is part of the Yan Mountain range and is renowned for its beautiful natural scenery and fresh air, making it a perfect place for outdoor recreation and relaxation.

Badaling

Although relatively farther from Dongcheng District, the Badaling section of the Great Wall is one of Beijing’s most famous tourist attractions and a symbol of China. It remains a popular destination for those seeking to experience China’s rich cultural heritage and breathtaking landscapes.

Recreational Spaces in Dongcheng

While Dongcheng itself lacks mountain landscapes, it offers numerous parks and green spaces such as Jingshan Park and Beihai Park. These parks, though not mountainous, provide excellent spots for leisure and exercise, allowing residents to enjoy a touch of nature within the city centers, including some elevated viewpoints overlooking Beijing’s urban sprawl.
