Introduction to Shanghai’s New Indoor Ski Resort

Shanghai recently welcomed visitors to the world’s largest indoor ski resort, offering a stark contrast to the sweltering heat outside. Despite experiencing the hottest August in 60 years, China continues to push the boundaries with innovative recreational facilities. The resort, located in coastal Lingang, is designed to offer a unique winter sports experience all year round.

Features of the Resort

The Shanghai Lsnow indoor skiing theme resort covers almost 100,000 square meters, surpassing the previous record-holder in northern Harbin. Modeled to resemble a glacier, the resort includes various amenities such as a chairlift, cable car, and a vibrant “steam train” that transports visitors to its four ski slopes and other attractions. At the opening ceremony, visitors were seen sporting padded overalls and designer goggles, ready to hit the slopes.

Energy and Environmental Considerations

Maintaining a sub-zero temperature within the vast atrium is no easy feat. The resort operates 72 cooling machines and 33 snow-making machines continuously. Acknowledging the significant energy demands, the Shanghai government highlighted efforts to maximize energy reuse, employing ice storage and waste-heat recovery systems. Furthermore, over three-quarters of the resort’s rooftop is equipped with solar panels, mitigating its carbon footprint.

Challenges and Industry Impact

The completion of the resort has faced several delays, with the originally planned opening date set for 2019. Nonetheless, the resort has now officially opened, even receiving certification from Guinness World Records. This development reflects China’s growing middle class and the government’s support of the ski industry, especially after Beijing hosted the 2022 Winter Olympics. While traditional outdoor ski destinations suffer due to climate change, indoor resorts like this one are setting new benchmarks in the industry.
