Introduction to Drama Hype

In the world of Chinese entertainment, the phrase ‘any publicity is good publicity’ is often cited. However, singer-turned-actor Liu Yuning recently pointed out that this is not always the case. In his recent live broadcast, he unveiled the shady practices that some production companies and fan clubs engage in to create buzz around upcoming dramas—practices that often leave the actors, like himself, as the victims.

The Tactics Behind the Scenes

Liu Yuning shared his experience regarding the dissemination of ‘fake’ casting news intended to attract viewers. He recounted instances where production companies would hint at his involvement in a project, only for it to be an attempt to divert attention from the actual leads, who might not meet the fans’ expectations. Liu expressed frustration at how these tactics led to him suffering from backlash and criticism from anti-fans, who felt empowered to voice their disdain.

The Cost of Manipulation

During the live broadcast, Liu Yuning lamented how such tactics leave him exposed and vulnerable. He noted, ‘They just used him as the first target,’ referring to how companies would publicly announce that he was in discussions for roles, only to later clarify that someone else was cast instead. This not only damaged his reputation but also subjected him to unnecessary verbal abuse when the rumor reached its peak. Liu concluded that overcoming such manipulative tactics feels impossible, leading many, including himself, to contemplate stepping away from the entertainment circle.
