Netflix has unveiled new character posters and stills for its highly anticipated drama “Genie, Make a Wish,” starring Kim Woo Bin and Suzy—and their dynamic is anything but ordinary.
Set to premiere on October 3, “Genie, Make a Wish” tells the story of Genie (Kim Woo Bin), a mysterious spirit who wakes from a thousand-year slumber to grant three life-altering wishes to Ka Young (Suzy), a cold, emotionless young woman who becomes the accidental owner of a magical lamp. As the devilish Genie adapts to the modern world, his chaotic presence collides with Ka Young’s rigid order, sparking an unexpected, electrifying romance.
A Battle Between Devil and Psychopath
The new character posters perfectly capture the eerie tension between the two leads. Genie, described as “the Satan of the lamp,” is shown radiating golden light, his seductive smile belying his sinister intentions. The tagline reads ominously: “All humans end up corrupted,” hinting at his bleak view of humanity. A floating hourglass in his hand suggests that time—and perhaps fate—is running out.
Meanwhile, Ka Young shows no fear. Wearing a glittering gown, she offers a subtle smile, but her intense gaze and scarred arms suggest she’s anything but fragile. Holding a drill poised to destroy the lamp, her poster features the chilling line: “I am the only evil in this world.” It’s clear: this is no damsel in distress, but someone just as dangerous as the spirit she’s up against.
Dark Humor and Sharp Dialogue
The character teaser videos take their twisted relationship up a notch with razor-sharp banter. Genie, emerging from the Dubai desert, declares: “I will never bow to you, a being made of dirt. I will corrupt you, and then I will kill you.” Ka Young, unfazed, fires back: “Shut up, go get a haircut.”
In her own teaser, Ka Young calmly threatens: “Want me to kill you as my first wish?” Genie, momentarily shaken, scrambles to recover. Their chemistry is dangerous, biting, and unexpectedly funny—promising a relationship filled with tension and unpredictability.
From Cabbage Fields to Dubai Runways
New stills from the drama only deepen the intrigue. Genie, once surrounded by the golden sands of Dubai, suddenly appears in the middle of a Korean cabbage field, having followed Ka Young back from the desert. His surreal presence among farmers and vegetables is both bizarre and amusing, especially as he cheerfully waves hello with his trademark grin.
Ka Young, in contrast, stuns in bold, floral-patterned fashion as she walks confidently through the streets of Dubai. Unbothered by curious stares, she maintains her composed, icy aura—perfectly embodying her emotionally detached character.
Can Chaos and Control Coexist?
At the heart of the story is Ka Young, a brilliant yet bizarre woman who follows strict routines and “rules” passed down from her grandmother. Genie, a force of chaos, seeks to unravel that structure. But as their worlds collide, the central question emerges: will their fight destroy one another—or transform into something neither of them expects?
With a fresh blend of dark fantasy, psychological intrigue, and offbeat humor, “Genie, Make a Wish” looks to be one of Netflix’s most daring K-dramas this year.
Don’t miss the premiere on October 3.
