Introduction to the Qianlong Garden
Located within the enchanting Forbidden City, the Qianlong Garden has been hidden from visitors for over a century. Constructed during the 1770s for the Qianlong Emperor, this exquisite garden has finally reopened its gates after an extensive 25-year restoration project that cost approximately $15 to $18 million, partly funded by the World Monuments Fund.
A Glimpse Into Restoration Efforts
The grand reopening took place in late September and signifies a monumental achievement in preserving cultural heritage. The renovation aimed to revive the garden, also known as the Palace of Tranquil Longevity, and restore the beauty that has attracted emperors for centuries. The project meticulously restored 27 structures and revitalized the serene landscape filled with spectacular rock gardens, ancient trees, and tranquil streams.
Experiencing the Qianlong Garden
Visitors to the Qianlong Garden can expect a remarkable journey through four interconnected courtyards, each designed as a personal retreat for the emperor. The new layout offers guests a chance to immerse themselves in the garden’s history while enjoying the intricate decorations and furnishings housed within its buildings. To enter the garden, guests must purchase tickets to the Palace Museum, with prices starting around $5.60 during off-peak seasons. It is advisable to buy tickets early to avoid the crowds and fully enjoy this historic marvel.
