The 2026 historical drama landscape is off to a strong start with the official launch of Gui Luan, a Tencent Video S+–rated costume drama centered on political intrigue and turbulent times. Alongside the filming announcement, the production released its main cast lineup and first on-set images, confirming Zhang Linghe and Jelly Lin as the leads. Their first collaboration immediately sparked widespread discussion across social platforms.

Early visuals from the opening ceremony suggest a carefully defined tonal direction. Zhang Linghe steps away from his familiar refined roles, appearing with a high ponytail and rugged, coarse-textured costume that underscores the ruthless edge of a self-made warlord rising from humble origins. Jelly Lin, by contrast, is styled in understated Wei–Jin–inspired robes, her restrained look emphasizing the fragility and resilience of a fallen princess navigating exile and loss. The contrast between the two creates a striking on-screen dynamic even before filming fully gets underway.

Adapted from a hugely popular Jinjiang novel with over 1.15 billion points, Gui Luan is set against a backdrop of political upheaval and fractured empires. The story follows Xiao Li, a grassroots hero who ascends through chaos, and Wen Yu, a princess carrying the burden of a destroyed kingdom. Bound by a forced political marriage, the pair begin as reluctant allies, locked in strategic caution. As power struggles intensify, their relationship evolves into one of mutual trust and shared ambition, blending romance with calculated survival in a volatile world.

With a strong source material, a production positioned at the top tier of the platform’s slate, and a lead pairing that combines visual contrast with narrative symmetry, Gui Luan has quickly emerged as one of the most anticipated historical dramas of the coming year. While its ultimate standing will depend on execution and storytelling depth, the project has already secured a prominent place in early 2026’s drama conversation.
