Melody Weng, a member of Taiwanese idol group AKB48 Team TP, has recently come under scrutiny after announcing a dual appointment with Shanghai-based sister group TSH48. She previously revealed in July 2024 that she would temporarily suspend activities to prepare for Taiwan’s General Scholastic Ability Test, assuring fans through a handwritten letter that she would return after completing the exam. However, following the test period, her absence from Team TP continued, culminating in her unexpected appearance on TSH48’s official roster.

Since joining AKB48 Team TP in 2023, Weng has attracted attention for her tall stature and refined image. Even when she missed two performances in March and April 2024 due to health issues, fans largely responded with understanding. Her decision to pause activities was framed as an academic necessity, made after discussions with her family and management, and was accompanied by a promise to reunite with supporters the following year.

After the examination period ended, Weng’s social media activity declined noticeably, while rumors surfaced regarding her possible admission to the Central Academy of Drama in China. In late 2025, TSH48 officially announced her participation as a concurrent member, prompting debate over whether the move aligned with the original intent of the AKB48 “concurrent member” system.

Introduced in 2012, the AKB48 concurrency system is traditionally defined by members actively contributing to both groups involved. In Weng’s case, however, her continued inactivity within Team TP while resuming promotions in Shanghai has raised questions about regulatory gray areas. Some fans argue that retaining her position without participation limits opportunities for other aspiring idols who remain fully committed to group activities.

As discussions continue, management has yet to issue a detailed statement clarifying Weng’s status, responsibilities, or long-term plans. The situation has underscored broader concerns about transparency and fairness within the system, with many observers calling for clearer guidelines to maintain trust among fans and ensure equitable group operations.
