The upcoming historical wuxia drama “Yu Lin Ling” is expected to air later this year and has already attracted significant attention ahead of its release. On Youku, the drama’s reservation count has approached one million, signaling strong early interest from audiences, particularly fans of the wuxia genre.

“Yu Lin Ling” is adapted from the fan-fiction novel of the same name by author minifish, which is based on the classic Chinese literary work “The Seven Heroes and Five Gallants.” While preserving the original spirit of the source material, the novel reconstructs the story through the perspective of the famed “Southern Hero” Zhan Zhao, offering a refreshed narrative structure and character development.
Directed by Liu Hongyuan and written by Wu Tong, the drama features a strong cast led by Yang Yang, Zhang Ruonan, and Fang Yilun. Supporting roles are played by Zhang Yuxi, Yue Yang, Xiu Qing, Lu Nuo, Zhang Mingen, Jiang Zhenhao, Shi An, Wang Zirui, and Xu Weilu, forming a well-rounded ensemble that adds depth to the story.

Set during the Northern Song Dynasty, the story follows Huo Linglong, the eldest daughter of Linglong Manor, who leaves home after rejecting a marriage arranged by her parents. During her journey, she encounters Zhan Zhao, a fourth-rank imperial guard who is being hunted by both righteous and villainous factions after obtaining incriminating evidence against Prince Xiangyang.
After Huo Linglong saves him, her curiosity toward Zhan Zhao gradually deepens. The pair later meet Bai Yutang, known as the “Embroidered Rat,” a hot-blooded figure who believes in using force to fight injustice. United by a shared sense of purpose, the three work together to uncover the truth behind a series of conspiracies, including investigations into illegal salt trafficking and the strategic seizure of military seal maps, ultimately uncovering a treason pact hidden within Prince Xiangyang’s residence.

Yang Yang takes on the role of Zhan Zhao, a character that has been portrayed by many actors in past adaptations. His recent performance in “A Record of a Mortal’s Journey to Immortality,” which received a Douban rating of over 7, has reinforced confidence in his ability to deliver a distinctive and contemporary interpretation of the iconic hero.
Zhang Ruonan plays Huo Linglong. Known for her roles in “You Are My Glory Days,” “Light Chaser Rescue,” and “Healing Love,” she has built a reputation for portraying characters with emotional nuance and sincerity. Her transition into the wuxia genre has drawn considerable anticipation.

Beyond the lead actors, the supporting cast also contributes to the drama’s appeal. Veteran actor Xiu Qing, who portrays Jing Yiming, is remembered for his roles in the 1998 version of “Water Margin” and the 2003 adaptation of “Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils,” the latter of which remains highly rated on Douban, underscoring his credibility as a seasoned performer.
With its combination of classic wuxia elements, a solid production team, and a well-chared cast, “Yu Lin Ling” aims to strike a balance between tradition and innovation. As its release approaches, the drama is poised to become one of the most talked-about wuxia productions of the year.
