Li Xian and the Love of Travel: Choosing to Lead One’s Own Life

For Li Xian, travel has never been merely about moving from one destination to another. It represents a conscious way of living—one that resists the idea that life must wait for a so-called “perfect moment” to begin.

Between demanding filming schedules, he has chosen to travel to Tibet; at moments when his career is widely regarded as being at its peak, he has stepped away from the spotlight to hike across volcanic landscapes in Indonesia. These decisions may seem unconventional, but they reveal a consistent belief: the courage to set out matters far more than waiting for everything to fall neatly into place.

In Li Xian’s view, the true value of a journey lies not in the grandeur of its scenery alone, but in the act of walking through the world itself. Travel, at its core, is not about reaching a geographical coordinate. It is about allowing the mind and body to engage directly with nature and reality, without filters or performance.

At an altitude of roughly 4,700 meters in Kulagangri, Tibet, he once completed a 25-kilometer trek with full gear alongside a photography blogger. Along the way, he celebrated the season’s first snow in the Northern Hemisphere with childlike excitement and paused in village teahouses to drink sweet tea and recover his strength. These moments, simple and unguarded, capture the essence of travel—letting go of identity, expectations, and roles to fully inhabit the present.

Li Xian has openly reflected on his personal transformation. He used to be someone prone to long-term planning and anxiety, but through repeated journeys, his mindset shifted. Rather than insisting on absolute control over the future, he learned to appreciate each moment as it unfolds. When faced with unexpected obstacles such as snow-blocked roads or altered itineraries, he no longer reacts with frustration. Instead, he embraces the unplanned and discovers meaning in detours. This acceptance of uncertainty is, in many ways, one of travel’s most profound lessons.

What makes Li Xian’s journeys resonate is not the difficulty of the routes he chooses, but the sense of agency they reflect. When asked whether his frequent hiking contradicts his identity as a public figure, his answer was straightforward: he leads his own work and his own life. This sense of authorship over one’s rhythm and choices is something many people long for in an increasingly fast-paced world.

Travel, of course, does not have to take the form of demanding expeditions. Reclaiming control over one’s life can be achieved in many ways. For some, cruise travel offers an elegant and accessible alternative—combining movement with comfort, and vast natural views with stability. Standing on the deck, facing an endless horizon of blue, one is reminded that setting out is not about escaping daily life, but about returning with greater clarity and calm.

For older travelers with more flexible schedules, cruises can mark the beginning of a new chapter. Without the strain of constant transfers or complicated planning, the journey unfolds at a gentle pace. Sunrises over the sea, leisurely walks through coastal towns, and quiet evenings under the stars allow the world to reveal itself gradually and generously.

As Li Xian has expressed when facing nature, everything feels smaller in front of vast mountains and oceans—including the worries that once seemed overwhelming. Travel expands perspective, softens the mind, and restores balance.

Life is not about waiting for storms to pass, but about learning to adjust one’s course and rediscover the connection between self and world with every new departure.
