Public attention has recently returned to the rumored relationship between actress Zhao Liying and director Zhao Deyin following the announcement of Zhao’s new film Dreams. Observers quickly noted that Zhao Liying is not involved in the project, while the female lead role is played by Wu Kexi, prompting renewed speculation about the status of Zhao Liying and Zhao Deyin’s relationship.

Zhao Liying and Zhao Deyin previously collaborated on the film The Heart of Qiao Yan, which was released in October 2024. In May 2025, paparazzi footage showing Zhao Deyin assisting with childcare led to widespread dating rumors. Neither party, however, publicly confirmed or denied the relationship.

Over the following months, conflicting reports continued to emerge. Some sources claimed Zhao Deyin visited Zhao Liying on set and stayed at the same hotel, while others suggested the two had already parted ways. At the same time, rumors circulated about a potential second collaboration, adding further uncertainty to the narrative.

In early 2026, Dreams was officially announced. The film marks Zhao Deyin’s first English-language feature, with Zhao serving as director, screenwriter, and producer. Wu Kexi not only stars as the lead but is also credited as a co-writer and executive producer. The project has reportedly been in development for seven years, and no official materials have indicated Zhao Liying’s participation.

Given Wu Kexi’s history as a long-time collaborator of Zhao Deyin, the casting decision has led some netizens to question whether the director has resumed working closely with his former partner. However, no statements have been issued by those involved, and such interpretations remain speculative.

Industry observers note that Zhao Liying’s absence from Dreams does not necessarily signal a personal split. As an English-language film targeting the international market, the project differs significantly from Zhao Liying’s recent work trajectory. From a career perspective, distancing herself from prolonged controversy may allow her to remain focused on future projects.

As of now, there has been no official confirmation regarding a breakup between Zhao Liying and Zhao Deyin. All related discussions remain based on public observation rather than verified statements.
