The blockbuster historical action franchise continues as Kento Yamazaki returns to the battlefield in the newest installment of the film series Kingdom 5: Clash of Souls, scheduled to premiere in Japan on July 17. Alongside the release announcement, the production team also unveiled the film’s first teaser video and a new promotional poster, offering audiences a glimpse of the largest battle yet in the franchise.

Set against the turbulent backdrop of China’s Warring States period, the Kingdom film series follows the journey of Xin, a war orphan who dreams of becoming the greatest general under the heavens. Played by Kento Yamazaki, the character’s destiny becomes closely intertwined with that of the young King Ying Zheng, portrayed by Ryo Yoshizawa, who is determined to unify China.

The new film continues the storyline established in the previous installment, Kingdom: Return of the Great General, while maintaining the franchise’s core creative team. Director Shinsuke Sato once again takes the helm, and many of the central cast members return, including Kanna Hashimoto, who reprises her role as He Liao Diao, the strategist who aspires to become a brilliant military tactician.

This fifth entry will adapt one of the most popular arcs from the original manga: the Coalition Army storyline. In the narrative, six powerful states—Chu, Zhao, Wei, Han, Yan, and Qi—form a massive alliance known as the Coalition Army to challenge the growing strength of Qin. The coalition is led by the enigmatic strategist Li Mu, portrayed by Shun Oguri, setting the stage for the largest-scale confrontation seen in the series so far.

The teaser trailer opens with the phrase “The legend returns,” signaling Xin’s renewed determination after inheriting the spear of the legendary General Wang Qi. Having proven himself during the Battle of Bayou, Xin now steps onto an even larger battlefield as he strives to reach the next stage of his ambitions.

The footage also previews an intense clash between Xin and the fierce warrior Man Ji, played by Yuki Yamada. Driven by resentment after witnessing his homeland ravaged by Qin, Man Ji fights with a relentless fury that positions him as a formidable opponent. Their confrontation hints at the brutal and high-stakes conflicts that await in the upcoming chapter.

With its large-scale battles, returning cast, and the adaptation of a fan-favorite storyline, Kingdom 5: Clash of Souls is expected to become one of the most anticipated Japanese films of the summer. The film aims to expand the epic scope of the franchise while continuing the intertwined journeys of Xin and Ying Zheng as they move closer to the dream of unifying the realm.
