The historical film The King’s Warden continues its remarkable box office run, achieving a major milestone as it surpasses 14 million moviegoers in South Korea. On the morning of March 20 KST, marking its 45th day since release, The King’s Warden officially entered an elite category of Korean cinema, becoming only the fifth domestic film to reach this level of attendance.

This achievement places The King’s Warden alongside a select group of record-breaking Korean productions. The only other films to have exceeded 14 million admissions are The Admiral: Roaring Currents, Extreme Job, Along with the Gods: The Two Worlds, and Ode to My Father. By joining this list, The King’s Warden further cements its status as one of the most successful Korean films in recent history.

In addition to its domestic success, The King’s Warden has also surpassed several major international blockbusters at the Korean box office. Its total viewership has exceeded that of Avengers: Endgame, Frozen 2, and Avatar, highlighting the film’s strong resonance with local audiences and its ability to compete with globally recognized titles.

Set in 1457, The King’s Warden tells the story of King Danjong, portrayed by Park Ji Hoon, the sixth king of the Joseon dynasty. After being betrayed and dethroned by his uncle, the young king is exiled to Cheongnyeongpo in Gangwon Province. There, he encounters Eom Heung Do, played by Yoo Hae Jin, a village chief who forms an unexpected bond with the fallen monarch.

Through this relationship, The King’s Warden explores themes of loyalty, betrayal, and humanity against the backdrop of historical upheaval. The emotional core of the story lies in the connection between the exiled king and the ordinary man who stands by him, offering a grounded perspective on power and loss.

With its continued success, The King’s Warden not only demonstrates strong audience appeal but also reflects the enduring interest in historical narratives within Korean cinema. As the film’s box office performance continues to rise, its place among the highest-grossing films in the country appears increasingly secure.
