Singer-songwriter G.E.M. (Gloria Tang) has recently revealed that she was diagnosed with thalassemia, shedding new light on the physical toll behind her demanding tour schedule. The disclosure came during a livestream, where she spoke candidly with fans following performances from her G.E.M. I AM GLORIA World Tour 2.0 (G.E.M. 邓紫棋 I AM GLORIA 世界巡回演唱会2.0), including her recent concerts at Taipei Arena.
According to G.E.M., she only learned about her condition after her mother informed her. “I didn’t even know I had thalassemia,” she said, expressing surprise at the diagnosis. Reflecting on her workload, she added that completing 153 shows under such circumstances made her exhaustion feel inevitable. Even so, she spoke with a mix of humor and self-reflection, admitting that she felt a sense of admiration for her own endurance.

Performing Through Physical Limits
Throughout the tour, G.E.M. maintained a high-intensity performance schedule, often engaging directly with audiences both on and off stage. Yet behind this consistency was a continuous physical challenge. She described relying on sheer willpower to sustain her performances, emphasizing that her ability to continue was not simply a matter of determination, but also of whether her body could keep up.
When asked by fans how long she planned to continue performing, she responded honestly: it ultimately depends on her physical condition. The statement reflects a growing awareness of the limits imposed by health, even for artists accustomed to demanding routines.
A Longstanding Physical Challenge
In addition to thalassemia, G.E.M. has previously spoken about another physical condition—atrophy on the left side of her jaw, which results in misalignment between her upper and lower teeth. This affects her pronunciation, occasionally causing unclear articulation or air leakage when speaking.
Paradoxically, this characteristic has contributed to the distinctiveness of her vocal style. What could have been seen as a limitation has instead become part of her artistic identity, shaping a sound that audiences readily recognize.
Revisiting Past Conflicts
During her Taipei concert, G.E.M. also briefly addressed her long-standing dispute with former manager Zhang Dan. She recalled the period when she participated in the show The Rap of China (中国新说唱), revealing that she had faced pressure to withdraw from the program, which later led to disagreements over contracts and compensation.
Despite revisiting this chapter, she emphasized that her intention was not to reopen old conflicts. Instead, she expressed a degree of gratitude, noting that she was ultimately able to participate in the show after standing her ground.
The performance itself incorporated a symbolic moment, as she concluded one segment by tearing up a photo featuring her former manager and producer Lupo Groinig. The gesture added a layer of irony and reflection, blending personal history with stage expression.
Strength Behind the Narrative
Taken together, G.E.M.’s recent revelations offer a more complete picture of her current stage in life and career. Beyond the scale of her tour and public success, they highlight the physical and emotional realities that accompany sustained performance at a high level.
Her experience underscores a broader truth within the industry: that behind moments of visibility often lies a quieter narrative of endurance. In G.E.M.’s case, that endurance is not only about maintaining performance standards, but also about navigating personal challenges while continuing to move forward.
