Singapore’s Remarkable Climb in Workcation Rankings

Singapore has been named the world’s seventh best city for a working vacation, outperforming several major regional cities. According to a report by the Swiss-based company International Workspace Group, the island city has risen by 14 places from last year’s ranking. Notable among the cities it surpassed are Jakarta (now in 8th place), Manila (16th), and Hong Kong (19th). This assessment considered factors such as climate, culture, accommodation, transport, food and drink, happiness, broadband speed, and the availability of flexible workspace.

Key Factors Behind Singapore’s High Ranking

Several elements contributed to Singapore’s high ranking. The city performed particularly well in the categories of broadband quality and sustainability. The report emphasized Singapore’s appeal as a “global gateway to Southeast Asia,” enhancing its attractiveness as a destination for both tourists and digital nomads. The city-state’s superior infrastructure and quality of life facilities were also significant factors that led to its prominent ranking.

Regional Comparison and New Visa Policies

Singapore’s ranking is not just a testament to its own merits but also highlights how it stacks up against its neighbors. Jakarta, which ranks 8th, and Manila, in 16th place, are both notable exclusions from the top spots. While Budapest topped this year’s list, followed by Barcelona and Rio de Janeiro, it is substantial that Singapore has ranked so highly in a global context. Moreover, Indonesia and Singapore have recently introduced new visa policies to attract digital nomads. In particular, Indonesia’s new “golden visa” allows stays of up to 10 years, with specific investment requirements for both five and ten-year options, demonstrating a regional competition to attract remote workers.

The Future of Workcations in Southeast Asia

As more professionals seek flexible working environments, cities like Singapore are likely to continue their rise in workcation rankings. With robust broadband, sustainable living conditions, and an array of cultural amenities, Singapore sets a high standard for what a workcation destination should be.
