Introduction to the Festival

The 28th Toronto Reel Asian International Film Festival has returned, celebrating its commitment to showcasing contemporary Asian cinema. Spanning from November 13 to November 24, this annual event provides a platform for a diverse array of films from international filmmakers. This year’s festival features an impressive lineup, with the international premiere of “The Land of Morning Calm” standing out as a highlight.

Synopsis of “The Land of Morning Calm”

In the film, young fisherman Yong Su, portrayed by Park Jong Hwan, concocts an elaborate insurance scam aimed at easing his family’s struggles. By staging his own disappearance, he hopes to secure a better life for his Vietnamese wife and aging mother. The plot thickens when his captain, Yeong Guk (Yoon Joo Sang), reluctantly reports him missing. Moreover, Yong Su’s mother’s refusal to associate his disappearance with death complicates the unfolding events, turning this white lie into a deepening moral dilemma.

Themes and Directorial Vision

Directed by Park Ri Woong, known for the critically acclaimed film “The Girl on a Bulldozer,” “The Land of Morning Calm” delves into complex themes of interracial marriages, sacrificial love, and familial struggles. It not only highlights the pitfalls of deceit but also paints an emotional portrait of the resilience of familial bonds amidst adversity. This poignant narrative ultimately invites audiences to reflect on the nature of sacrifice within different forms of families, making it a compelling addition to this year’s festival.
