Introduction to Techo International Airport

Cambodia is gearing up for the launch of its new airport, the Techo International Airport, which is scheduled for a soft opening in July 2025. This development comes as a significant boost to the country’s tourism sector, which saw a downturn due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The airport is strategically located about 30 kilometers south of Phnom Penh, covering an expansive area of 2,600 hectares and aims to enhance Cambodia’s standing in Southeast Asia’s competitive tourism landscape.

Investment and Construction Details

The Techo International Airport represents a collaborative effort between the Cambodian government and Overseas Cambodian Investment Corporation, totaling a remarkable investment of $1.5 billion. The construction is being managed by the China Construction Third Engineering Bureau Group Co., Ltd., with innovative design by the British architectural firm Foster + Partners. Their vision includes a unique terminal structure characterized by a lightweight steel grid shell providing ample daylight, creating a vibrant atmosphere for travelers.

Capacity and Future Potential

Initially, the new airport is expected to accommodate up to 13 million passengers annually, with plans to expand capacity to 30 million by 2030 and 50 million by 2050. This new facility marks the second major airport to open in Cambodia within a short span, following the Siem Reap-Angkor International Airport that commenced operations in 2023. With tourism remaining a cornerstone of the Cambodian economy, the new airport is anticipated to attract even greater numbers of international visitors, further supporting the sector’s revival and growth.
