Lee Joon Gi may soon return to the small screen in a role that blends royal authority with razor-sharp humor.
According to industry reports on July 23, the actor has been offered the lead role in the upcoming historical comedy-action drama Gyeongbokgung Detective Agency (working title). In response, his agency Namoo Actors confirmed that the project is “currently under review.”
Gyeongbokgung Detective Agency tells the unusual story of a king with a keen eye for solving mysteries and a rookie royal inspector who unexpectedly finds himself chasing after his own monarch. The drama is set in a peaceful period of the Joseon dynasty, where political tension is replaced by clever investigations, banter, and unexpected action.
Lee Joon Gi is reportedly in talks to play King Hyejong, a confident and sharp-tongued monarch with a flair for deductive reasoning. Known for his cutting wit and sarcasm, the king spends his time not just ruling the court, but also uncovering secrets and cracking complex cases with ease. Opposite him is the character Lee Seo, a young inspector who’s long on knowledge but short on real-world experience.
If confirmed, this will mark Lee Joon Gi’s first drama comeback in three years, following his role in tvN’s Arthdal Chronicles: The Sword of Aramun (2023).
The combination of genre—historical, comedy, and detective elements—along with Lee Joon Gi’s charisma, promises a fresh and entertaining twist on the classic Joseon setting. Fans are now waiting eagerly to see whether he will accept the offer.
