At 7:43 p.m. on August 20, Mandopop singer Huang An announced on Weibo that renowned Taiwanese singer Qian Baihui passed away from illness in the early hours of August 19, at the age of 62.
According to public information, Qian Baihui, born Zhong Lanrui in May 1963 in Hsinchu County, Taiwan, graduated from Yu Da Commercial & Technical Vocational School in Taoyuan. Known for her sweet voice and lyrical style, she was one of the notable female singers in the Chinese-language music scene of the 1980s and 1990s.
In 1984, after meeting composer–director Liu Jia-chang, Qian came to prominence with her performance of his song 《为同心协力而跑》. That same year, she released her debut album 《丝雨长巷》. In 1986, she put out the album 《想你的时候》, which included the widely loved tracks 《想你的时候》 and 《走过咖啡屋》; the album sold 200,000 copies in Taiwan and made her a household name. Later that year, she teamed up with Wu Diqing and Pan Yueyun on the song 《今又龙年》.
In 1988, Qian appeared in her first film, 《旧情绵绵》. In 1990, she performed at the “Light of the Asian Games” concert and the “Cross-Strait Asian Games Athletes Gala.” After marrying musician Gao Dalin in 1992, she gradually shifted her focus to family life, though she continued to take on projects, including portraying Zhu Yingtai in the TV drama 《新梁山伯与祝英台》.
Qian returned to the music scene in 2006 with the album 《女人别太傻》. In 2010, she collaborated with Malaysian singer Siti Nurhaliza on the album Siti Nurhaliza and Friends. She settled in Chengdu in March 2021 and released the single 《留在成都》 thereafter. In January 2022, she held her first solo concert since settling in the city, and on September 23, 2024, she participated in the 8th “Most Beloved Golden Hits” music gala 《最爱金曲榜》.
Qian Baihui’s songs accompanied the youth of a generation; her passing has left many fans in deep sorrow.
