Netflix has announced the original series “This Is I”, premiering globally in February 2026, starring Mochizuki Haruki in his first major lead role and Saito Takumi in a pivotal supporting role.

The drama is inspired by the true story of Haruna Ai (born Onishi Kenji), who rose to fame in 2008 with her celebrity impressions of Matsuura Aya. The series depicts her journey alongside Dr. Koji Wada, the physician who changed her life, as they navigate the challenges of gender identity and the early, taboo era of gender reassignment surgery in Japan.

Story summary:
From a young age, Kenji (Mochizuki) struggles to understand his true self. Despite facing discrimination and misunderstanding, he never abandons his dream of becoming an idol like Matsuda Seiko. Dr. Wada (Saito), unfamiliar with the struggles of transgender individuals, is confronted with harsh realities upon meeting Kenji.

Kenji ultimately becomes Wada’s first patient to undergo gender confirmation surgery, marking a turning point for both of them. As Kenji embraces his authentic life, Wada continues to support his patients while questioning what “true medical care” means.

This Is I portrays the deep bond and mutual trust between two people who challenged prejudice and isolation to pursue self-acceptance and compassion — a heartfelt story of courage, identity, and connection.
