As anticipation builds for MBC’s upcoming drama Perfect Crown, IU is preparing to present a character that blends contradiction, charm, and emotional complexity. Taking on the role of Sung Hee Joo, she steps into a story set in an alternate version of modern Korea where a constitutional monarchy reshapes the boundaries between status, power, and personal identity.

In Perfect Crown, Sung Hee Joo is introduced as a chaebol heiress who seemingly possesses everything—beauty, intelligence, and wealth—yet remains constrained by her identity as a commoner and her birth status. Opposite her stands Grand Prince Yi An, played by Byeon Woo Seok, a royal figure who, despite his lineage, lacks real power. This contrast establishes a narrative dynamic rooted in imbalance, tension, and gradual emotional entanglement.

Discussing her decision to join the project following When Life Gives You Tangerines, IU noted that the drama’s title first caught her attention, but it was ultimately the complexity of the characters that convinced her. She described Sung Hee Joo as unpredictable and compelling, particularly drawn to the character’s ability to act decisively and pursue what she wants without hesitation. This sense of proactiveness, according to IU, forms a key part of the character’s appeal.

To further define the role, IU summarized Sung Hee Joo with three keywords: ambition, temperament, and cuteness. Early in the story, the character appears driven by uncontrollable desire and a somewhat eccentric personality. However, as the narrative unfolds, her emotional layers gradually surface, revealing a softer yet equally strong side. This evolution allows the character to move beyond archetypes, instead occupying a more multidimensional space.

A significant aspect of IU’s performance lies in balancing strength with vulnerability. While Sung Hee Joo often masks her insecurities with cynicism and confidence, IU emphasized the importance of allowing moments of loneliness and fragility to emerge naturally. She paid particular attention to subtle shifts in tone and expression, especially in distinguishing when the character is genuinely driven by excitement versus when she is emotionally restrained.

The relationship between Sung Hee Joo and Grand Prince Yi An also serves as a central emotional axis. As Hee Joo gradually sets aside pride and uses persistence to build a connection, her emotional transformation becomes more visible. According to IU, it is precisely at the point where her feelings begin to change that the character’s layered personality is most clearly revealed.

Looking ahead, IU highlighted several reasons for audiences to anticipate Perfect Crown, including its fast-paced early development, the intricate emotional interplay between characters, and a more deeply felt romantic storyline in the latter half. With these elements combined, the drama aims to offer both narrative momentum and emotional depth.

Set to premiere on April 10 at 9:40 p.m. KST, Perfect Crown positions itself as a project that balances concept-driven storytelling with character-focused exploration—an approach that may further expand IU’s range as an actress.
