Sri Lanka’s New Visa Policy

In a significant move to rejuvenate its tourism sector and support its ailing economy, Sri Lanka has announced the approval of free tourist visas for visitors from 35 countries. The initiative, approved by Sri Lanka’s cabinet, aims to attract a diverse range of tourists from various global economies including China, India, and Russia.

Details of the Pilot Program

The six-month pilot program, set to commence on October 1, will grant tourists 30-day visas free of charge. This measure aligns with the broader vision of the Sri Lankan government to transform the country into a free-visa destination, similar to tourism giants such as Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. Cabinet spokesman and Transport Minister Bandula Gunawardana reiterated the importance of this objective during a recent press briefing.

Countries on the List

The extensive list of countries eligible for the free tourist visas includes Australia, Belgium, China, Denmark, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Japan, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Nepal, Netherlands, Poland, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Thailand, UAE, and the UK, among others. This diverse array not only spans Asia but also extends to Europe and other regions, reflecting Sri Lanka’s commitment to boosting its tourism industry.

Reviving the Tourism Sector

Sri Lanka’s tourism industry has faced significant challenges, initially due to the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequently from a severe financial crisis in 2022. However, the industry has shown signs of recovery, with nearly 2 million tourist arrivals by mid-August 2023, the highest since 2019. Promotional efforts and policy changes like this visa initiative are expected to further accelerate this positive trend.

Economic Impact

Tourism has always been a crucial component of Sri Lanka’s economy. According to the Sri Lanka Development Authority, India remains the largest source of tourists, followed by the UK. The country earned $1.5 billion from tourism in the first half of 2023, a substantial increase compared to the $875 million earned during the same period last year. The free tourist visa policy is anticipated to bolster these numbers, contributing significantly to the nation’s economic revival.
