NUS Implements Week-Long Restrictions to Curb Tourist Influx

Introduction to NUS Restrictions

The National University of Singapore (NUS) has announced a series of temporary restrictions aimed at limiting the influx of tourists on its campus from September 30 to October 7. As a globally recognized institution, it seeks to prioritize the well-being of its students and staff amidst rising visitor numbers.

Access Limitations for Shuttle Services and Food Courts

During this period, only authorized personnel, students, and staff will be allowed to use the university’s internal shuttle bus service between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m., with exceptions made on October 6. Similar measures will impact the university’s two food courts, Fine Food and Flavors, which will also restrict access from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Central Library and Security Protocols

Additionally, the NUS central library will be closed to unauthorized visitors, further emphasizing the university’s commitment to maintaining a conducive environment for its educational activities. Security checks will be enforced, requiring individuals to present NUS-approved passes or relevant documentation for entry. These initiatives are a response to projections indicating an influx of international visitors during the first week of October, potentially disrupting the daily activities of its academic community.

These measures reflect an understanding that, while the NUS campus attracts tourists due to its stunning architecture and lively student life, the primary focus must remain on the student experience. Notably, earlier this year, Nanyang Technological University (NTU) introduced similar entry fees for tour groups, emphasizing the growing challenge universities face as destinations for both education and tourism.
