The Shift of Chinese Tourists: Why Thailand and Malaysia Are the New Favorites

Introduction to the Changing Travel Preferences

During the recent Golden Week holiday, the dynamics of Chinese outbound tourism have notably shifted. Data indicates that Chinese tourists are increasingly favoring destinations with more relaxed visa policies. While Vietnam has traditionally been a popular choice, recent statistics reveal a marked decline in Chinese tourist arrivals there.

Thailand and Malaysia: The Top Choices

This year, from October 1-7, the number of overseas trips taken by Chinese tourists surged by 60% compared to last year. According to Trip.com, the top five destinations included Malaysia and Thailand, emphasizing a clear preference for these locations. The allure of simplified travel processes has significantly contributed to this shift, as tourists are avoiding the complexities often associated with obtaining visas.

The Impact of Visa Policies

Both Thailand and Malaysia have implemented favorable visa exemptions to attract Chinese tourists. Thailand introduced permanent visa exemptions for Chinese citizens in March, while Malaysia has extended a 30-day visa waiver until 2026. These policies have not only encouraged travel but have also fueled economic recovery in the tourism sector. During the Golden Week, Thailand welcomed 183,000 Chinese tourists, generating revenues of 5.1 billion baht, thus nearing pre-pandemic levels.

In comparison, the decrease in arrivals in Vietnam highlights the growing trend towards destinations with lenient entry requirements. The surge in Alipay transactions by Chinese users abroad underlines this trend, showing a 60% increase in spending during the holiday period.
