Introduction to Bangkok Airways’ Expansion Plans
In light of the worldwide acclaim of HBO’s hit series ‘The White Lotus,’ which is currently filming its third season in Koh Samui, Bangkok Airways is preparing for a significant fleet expansion. This initiative seeks to accommodate the anticipated surge in tourism, positioning the airline for a thriving season ahead. CEO Puttipong Prasarttong-Osoth confirmed plans for the acquisition of up to 30 new aircraft to enhance their operational capabilities.
Details of the Aircraft Orders
Bangkok Airways intends to place orders for at least 20 modern planes from prominent manufacturers such as Airbus, Boeing, and Embraer within the first half of the year. Additionally, the airline may follow up with an order for approximately 10 more aircraft. This ambitious fleet refresh aims to replace older models, some of which have been in service for nearly two decades, ensuring that Bangkok Airways remains competitive in the aviation market.
Impact of Tourism Growth on Bangkok Airways
The filming of ‘The White Lotus’ is projected to substantially boost tourism dynamics in Thailand, which is good news for Bangkok Airways. As the operator of Samui Airport, the airline is also investing ฿1.5 billion (approximately US$44.6 million) in significant renovations to support the increasing passenger flow. Advanced bookings have already showcased a 14% increase, while travel to Koh Samui alone is expected to grow by up to 20%. With the government’s expectation of 40 million tourist arrivals this year, Bangkok Airways anticipates serving a record 4.7 million passengers, a rise from 4.3 million last year.
