Overview of Recent Flight Suspensions

Bangkok Airways, one of Thailand’s prominent carriers, announced the suspension of flights between Bangkok and Mae Hong Son, effective from March 15 to April 20. This decision follows increasing air pollution levels that have significantly impaired visibility. The airline aims to ensure passenger safety as smog blankets the region, making landing nearly impossible during this period.

Impact of Seasonal Air Pollution

Air quality in northern Thailand typically deteriorates between December and April, largely due to agricultural practices such as crop burning. Farmers often ignite stubble to clear land for the upcoming planting season, leading to a rise in particulate matter and poor air quality. Despite the Thai government’s ban on crop burning implemented in early 2025, the effectiveness of this measure is still under scrutiny, as evidenced by alarming air quality index (AQI) readings.

Consequences for Travelers

The flight cancellations are likely to disrupt travel plans for many tourists headed to Mae Hong Son, a popular destination known for its natural beauty and cultural significance. The recent air pollution levels measured in the area were found to be 7.9 times higher than the World Health Organization’s guidelines, indicating a pressing environmental health issue. Travelers are advised to stay informed about flight operations and regional air quality conditions as they plan their journeys during this challenging season.
