Overview of Eikando
Eikando, properly known as Zenrinji, is one of Kyoto’s most celebrated spots for viewing autumn foliage. Located close to the famous Nanzenji Temple and easily accessed via the Keage Station, this temple provides a picturesque setting, especially during the vibrant fall season. It is often referred to affectionately as “Maple Leaves Eikando” due to its breathtaking red leaves that drape the grounds each autumn.
Unmatched Experience in November
If you’re planning a visit, the best time to enjoy the stunning autumn colors at Eikando is in November. During this month, the temple hosts a special night lighting event that transforms the garden into a magical realm filled with amber and crimson hues. This enchanting experience draws many visitors, and it truly feels like you are immersed in a fiery landscape, highlighting the serene beauty of the temple at night.
Visiting Tips and Information
Despite its popularity, you can mitigate long lines by arriving around 8 AM. While this allows for a lesser crowd, keep in mind that the temple lights are turned off promptly at 9 PM, leaving you with only a short window to explore. Admission fees vary, ranging from ¥600 generally to ¥1000 during the autumn season, with night lighting tickets available for ¥600. To reach Eikando, take the Kyoto Municipal Subway Tozai Line to Keage Station and walk for approximately 15 minutes to reach this autumn wonderland.
