Proposed Increase in Tourism Budget
The Indonesian Tourism Minister, Widiyanti Putri Wardhana, has announced plans to raise the ministry’s budget ceiling to 2.254 trillion RP (approximately US$141.6 million) for 2025. This proposal is designed to enhance priority tourism programs and stimulate growth in the industry. During a recent meeting with Commission VII of the Indonesian House of Representatives in Jakarta, Wardhana highlighted the significance of this increase, especially in light of the initial budget of 1.489 trillion RP.
Rising Tourist Arrivals
Indonesia, recognized as Southeast Asia’s largest economy, has experienced a notable surge in foreign tourist arrivals. According to official data, over 10 million international visitors arrived in the first nine months of this year, reflecting a 20% year-on-year rise. The target for the end of the year is set at 14 million foreign visitors, indicating the ministry’s commitment to revitalizing the tourism sector.
Key Initiatives and Collaborations
Wardhana underscored four main programs aimed at improving tourism. These include enhancing the ‘Proud of Traveling in Indonesia’ (BBWI) initiative, developing the digital marketing calendar of events, making airfares more affordable, and upgrading human resources within the tourism sector. Collaboration with various ministries and agencies is crucial to achieving these goals, as the ministry focuses on quality improvement through vocational education, training, and community empowerment in tourism villages.
