Introduction

Streaming giant Youku recently issued an apology to former R1SE member Xia Zhiguang following a series of blunders during a live broadcast featuring the cast of the youth fantasy web drama ‘Dashing Youth’ (少年白马醉春风). The apology came after fans expressed their displeasure over the handling of Xia Zhiguang’s character, Sikong Changfeng, and the subsequent mistakes made during the live event.

The Controversial Label

During the broadcast, Xia Zhiguang was asked about his role as ‘the protagonist’s bodyguard,’ a description that left fans and the actor himself disappointed. Sikong Changfeng, portrayed by Xia, is a wanderer highly proficient with the spear and a friend to the protagonist, Baili Dongjun, played by Neo Hou. Fans felt that referring to Changfeng as a bodyguard undermined the character’s independent significance and complexity within the storyline.

Broadcast Blunders

Compounding the issue was a cut scene intended to feature Xia Zhiguang that was replaced by a different clip not containing him at all. This led to accusations from fans that the organizers were disrespecting the actor and not giving him due recognition. The situation worsened when the expected highlight scene was not played initially, further fueling fans’ dissatisfaction.

Apology and Resolution

In response to the backlash, Youku issued a formal apology the following day. The streaming service explained that the mishap was due to network issues and emphasized that there was no malicious intent. They also admitted to ‘inappropriately describing’ the character of Sikong Changfeng and reiterated their respect for the artists involved. Youku stated, ‘We sincerely apologize to the audience for the misunderstanding this has caused’ and expressed their gratitude for the artists’ participation.

Adapted from Zhou Munan’s novel, ‘Dashing Youth’ follows the adventures of Xihou Mansion’s young master, Baili Dongjun, and his companions, including Sikong Changfeng, as they navigate the martial arts world. The drama has garnered a significant following, making the oversight even more impactful among its dedicated fans.
