Kyoko Yoshine stars in Yuzai, to AI wa Tsugeta, a special drama adapted from the novel by Nakayama Shichiri. The production delves into the ethical boundaries of artificial intelligence in the judicial system, raising fundamental questions about the nature of AI and the responsibilities of those who rely on it in court.

Yoshine plays Koenji Madoka, a newly appointed judge tasked with evaluating an AI system known as “Honshin,” designed to support judicial decision-making. When she inputs data from past cases, Honshin immediately generates verdicts identical to those produced by seasoned judges after extensive deliberation. While many judges welcome the streamlined workflow, Madoka remains cautious, sensing the potential risks of overreliance on an automated system that cannot fully grasp human nuance.

Her concerns intensify when she is assigned a sensitive case involving a soon-to-retire judge, Hiba, and an 18-year-old boy who fatally stabbed his father. Before the actual trial begins, Honshin is asked to simulate a preliminary ruling. The AI instantly issues a death-penalty judgment—a result that startles Madoka and compels her to question the system’s interpretive limits. As she digs deeper, she confronts the unsettling possibility that justice may be distorted when human judgment is overshadowed by algorithmic output.

Produced by NHK, Yuzai, to AI wa Tsugeta is scheduled to air in spring 2026. With its sharp examination of technology’s expanding reach in the legal world, the drama promises to be a compelling exploration of justice in an age shaped by AI.
