The upcoming Japanese drama Mirai no Musuko (“Future Son”), starring Shida Mirai, has unveiled its first official poster along with newly announced cast members, including Yanai Yumena, Itakura Takeshi, Namba Now, and Hagiwara Mamoru.

Based on a manga by Aso Kumiko and Kuromugi Hajime—who previously worked on the acclaimed family drama Marumo no Okite—the series blends gentle fantasy elements with grounded emotional storytelling. At its core, Mirai no Musuko is a story about love, responsibility, and self-discovery that transcends time.

Shida Mirai plays Shiokawa Mirai, a 28-year-old woman who finds herself at a dead end in life. She has no stable job, no savings, and no boyfriend. Although she once dreamed of becoming an actress, reality has pushed her into part-time work, leaving her unable to reconcile ambition with survival.

One day, her stagnant life is suddenly disrupted when a young boy named Shiokawa Sota (played by child actor Amano Yu) appears, claiming to be her son from the future. This unexpected encounter forces Mirai to confront not only her present struggles but also the person she might become.

Amano Yu was selected for the role after auditions involving approximately 200 children. The drama also features three key male roles portrayed by Shiono Akihisa, Hyodo Katsumi, and Kotaki Nozomu (WEST.), each representing different paths and possibilities that intersect with Mirai’s journey.

Rather than focusing solely on parent-child bonds, Mirai no Musuko uses its time-crossing premise to explore the anxieties of modern adulthood—dreams deferred, uncertain futures, and the quiet courage required to keep moving forward. Through the presence of a “son from the future,” the series gently asks what it truly means to take responsibility for one’s life.

Mirai no Musuko will premiere on January 13, airing every Tuesday at 10:00 p.m. in Japan.
