The Japanese film Shuten no Ano Ko has officially unveiled its key visual poster and main trailer, drawing attention for its literary roots and delicate storytelling. Starring Toma and Nakajima Sena, the film is adapted from Asako Yuzuki’s debut novel and a collection of four short stories, all set within the confines of a private girls’ school.

The supporting cast includes Hirasawa Kokoro, Minami Kotona, Fukagawa Mai, Ishida Hikari, Niihara Taisuke, Konishi Sakurako, and Nomura Masumi, forming a layered ensemble that enriches the film’s portrayal of adolescence.

The story begins on the day of the school’s entrance ceremony. Kiyoko (played by Toma) and Natsuko (Hirasawa Kokoro), newly graduated from middle school, meet Akari (Nakajima Sena), a transfer student who lives in the dormitory. Akari stands out due to her background—her father is a renowned photographer, and she has spent much of her life abroad—sparking Kiyoko’s quiet curiosity.

As Kiyoko and Akari begin sharing lunches and spending time together, Kiyoko believes a close friendship has formed. However, her discovery of Akari’s diary becomes a turning point, subtly yet decisively altering their relationship. What follows is a quiet unraveling of trust, perception, and emotional distance, capturing the fragile and often misunderstood bonds between young girls.

Judging from the released visuals and trailer, Shuten no Ano Ko adopts a restrained, introspective tone characteristic of Japanese youth adaptations, focusing on unspoken emotions and the subtle fractures that emerge during formative years.

Shuten no Ano Ko is scheduled for theatrical release in Japan on January 23, 2026.
