“Kokurojo,” a historical mystery film written and directed by Kiyoshi Kurosawa, is set to be released this year. Marking Kurosawa’s first foray into period drama, the film features an ensemble cast including Motoki Masahiro, Suda Masaki, Yoshitaka Yuriko, Aoki Munetaka, Miyadate Ryota (Snow Man), Emoto Tasuku, and Odagiri Joe.

The film is based on the award-winning novel of the same name by Yonezawa Honobu, which received the 166th Naoki Prize and the 12th Yamada Futaro Award. Set during Japan’s Sengoku period, the story combines historical drama with a locked-room mystery structure, portraying a series of unexplained incidents unfolding within a castle under siege while delving into the psychological transformations of those trapped inside.
Motoki Masahiro stars as Murashige Araki, a warlord who rises up against the authoritarian rule of Oda Nobunaga and seals off his castle in defiance. Surrounded and isolated by Oda’s forces, Murashige struggles to protect both the castle and its people, all while restraining his increasingly volatile retainers. His wife Chiyoho, portrayed by Yoshitaka Yuriko, serves as his emotional anchor during the mounting crisis.
The fragile order collapses when a young boy is murdered inside the castle. From that moment, a chain of mysterious events unfolds, and suspicion spreads throughout what has effectively become a massive sealed chamber. Murashige turns to Kuroda Kanbei, a brilliant yet dangerous military strategist played by Suda Masaki, who is being held captive within the castle. Together, the two men begin unraveling the truth behind the incident amid rising paranoia and shifting alliances.
By blending Sengoku-era history with suspense and psychological inquiry, “Kokurojo” expands Kurosawa’s cinematic language into new territory, using a closed setting to amplify fear, doubt, and the fragility of human reason under extreme pressure.
