The television drama Toki sude ni Osushi!? (tentative English title), starring acclaimed Japanese actress Hiromi Nagasaku, is set to premiere on TBS this April. The series centers on a woman who reaches a major life milestone after completing her child-rearing responsibilities and, for the first time in years, is forced to confront a moment that belongs solely to herself.

Nagasaku plays Machiyama Minato, a woman who devoted her life to raising her son after losing her husband in an accident fourteen years ago. Minato works full-time at a supermarket and maintains a cheerful, energetic demeanor while balancing work and family. This spring, however, her son leaves home to begin his professional life, marking the first time in decades that Minato is left with personal freedom of her own.

Rather than feeling liberated, Minato finds herself unsure of how to navigate this unfamiliar phase. With her long-established routine suddenly gone, she struggles to understand what she wants from life beyond her role as a mother. Her path takes an unexpected turn when she encounters a “Sushi Academy” that claims it can turn anyone into a sushi chef in just three months.

Instead of focusing on dramatic plot developments, Toki sude ni Osushi!? presents a quiet, observational narrative that explores how women redefine themselves in midlife. Through everyday moments, the drama examines themes of identity, independence, and the relationship between personal aspirations and social expectations.

Toki sude ni Osushi!? will air every Tuesday at 10:00 PM on TBS, starting in April.
