A new Korean romantic comedy is on the horizon. On February 25, it was confirmed that Kang Min Ah will star alongside Kim Myung Soo in the upcoming drama Empathy Cells, drawing attention for its unusual emotional premise.

A romance built on shared emotions

Empathy Cells tells the story of a woman who rejects empathy and a man overwhelmed by it. When a surreal phenomenon causes them to share each other’s emotions, both are forced to confront their inner wounds and gradually discover love through understanding.

The concept blends fantasy with psychological healing, offering both lighthearted romantic comedy and deeper emotional exploration.

Kang Min Ah plays an idol-turned-actress facing an emotional crisis

Kang Min Ah will portray Yoo Ji An, a former “nation’s idol” who transitioned into acting after experiencing massive popularity during her girl group days.

Because of her mother’s strict upbringing, Ji An learned to suppress her emotions from childhood. Her emotional detachment eventually sparks controversy over her acting abilities, pushing her career into crisis.

Through an unexpected emotional transfer experience with a counselor, Ji An begins to rediscover feelings she had long buried—forming the core of her character growth.

Kim Myung Soo as a counselor burdened by empathy

Kim Myung Soo takes on the role of Cha Eun Hwan, a psychological counselor with heightened empathy that often becomes emotionally exhausting.

His warmth contrasts sharply with Ji An’s emotional distance, creating a dynamic that naturally drives both conflict and healing throughout the story.

The pairing promises a “healing romance” built on mutual understanding rather than typical rom-com tropes.

A story reflecting identity and emotional authenticity

Beyond romance, the drama touches on themes of public perception, emotional authenticity, and the pressure faced by idols transitioning into acting careers. This layer of realism may strengthen viewer connection while adding depth to the narrative.

Broadcast planned for the second half of the year

The drama is currently aiming for a second-half broadcast, and with its unique premise and emotionally contrasting leads, Empathy Cells is already generating anticipation among romance drama fans.
