JTBC’s We Are All Trying Here is preparing to shift into a more emotionally intimate direction as Go Youn Jung and Han Sun Hwa share a deeply personal late-night conversation that gradually breaks down the emotional walls between their characters.
The drama follows aspiring film director Hwang Dong Man, played by Koo Kyo Hwan, a man struggling with feelings of failure while watching the people around him move forward successfully. Consumed by insecurity, jealousy, and emotional exhaustion, he begins searching for meaning and peace amid the growing chaos of his life.
But while the series initially centered heavily around Dong Man’s frustrations and emotional instability, recent episodes have increasingly expanded the emotional depth of the female characters surrounding him.

Among them, the evolving relationship between Byun Eun Ah and Jang Mi Ran has unexpectedly become one of the drama’s most emotionally intriguing dynamics.
Previously, Go Youn Jung’s character Byun Eun Ah left a strong impression on Jang Mi Ran through her brutally honest remarks. Although Mi Ran initially felt hurt and offended by Eun Ah’s sharp observations, she also recognized an uncomfortable sincerity within them — the kind of honesty people rarely hear from those around them.
That emotional turning point now leads into a much more vulnerable moment between the two women.
In newly released stills from the upcoming episode, Jang Mi Ran opens up emotionally during what the production team describes as a “girls night.” Despite living under the glamorous image of a celebrity, Mi Ran has secretly been carrying deep loneliness and emotional emptiness for a long time.
The photos show her drinking while candidly confessing emotions she has never revealed to anyone else. Her carefully maintained composure appears to slowly unravel as she speaks honestly about the isolation hidden beneath her seemingly perfect public life.
Meanwhile, Byun Eun Ah quietly listens beside her.
Rather than responding with dramatic reassurance, Eun Ah simply watches Mi Ran with calm compassion — a subtle reaction that reflects the growing emotional understanding between the two women.
What makes this relationship particularly compelling is that it does not feel built around rivalry or superficial female friendship tropes often seen in dramas. Instead, We Are All Trying Here seems more interested in exploring emotional recognition between two women carrying different kinds of wounds.
According to the production team, both characters are connected through their shared relationship with Oh Jung Hee, which gradually becomes the emotional foundation allowing them to understand one another more deeply.
And in many ways, the emotional atmosphere surrounding this storyline matches the overall tone of the drama itself.
Although We Are All Trying Here contains comedy and slice-of-life elements, the series consistently focuses on emotional exhaustion hidden beneath ordinary adult lives. Whether through failed ambitions, loneliness, envy, or emotional suppression, the drama repeatedly asks how people continue moving forward while quietly falling apart internally.
That is also why the scenes between Go Youn Jung and Han Sun Hwa feel especially effective.
Neither character is portrayed as emotionally perfect or strong all the time. Instead, both women appear exhausted in different ways — one emotionally guarded, the other emotionally starving despite external success.
The result is a quieter but more mature kind of emotional connection.
Rather than explosive confrontations, the drama allows silence, discomfort, and small gestures to carry emotional weight. And judging from the newly released stills, tonight’s episode may become one of the series’ most emotionally revealing chapters so far.
The next episode of We Are All Trying Here airs on May 16 at 10:40 p.m. KST.
