Hong Kong actress Yumi, now 37, has recently spoken candidly about a painful chapter in her life, revealing that she suffered domestic abuse during her previous marriage—an experience that profoundly reshaped her outlook on relationships.

Yumi rose to fame after winning a singing competition in 2002 and went on to build a multifaceted career in entertainment. She worked as a host on several TVB programs and appeared in dramas such as When Clover Meets Sword and E.U. Her career progressed steadily in her early years. In recent times, however, she has drawn renewed public attention due to her high-profile relationship with Lam Tsz, the former boyfriend of Miss Hong Kong winner Louisa Mak.
In a recent interview, Yumi opened up about her marriage to her ex-husband, Lam Yan Ho. According to her, the marriage lasted around three years, but serious cracks began to appear about a year and a half in, when their differing values became impossible to ignore. While Yumi had entered the workforce early and built financial independence, her ex-husband grew up in a church environment with limited exposure to professional life.

As the initial passion faded, conflicts intensified. Yumi revealed that her ex-husband would lose control when intoxicated, sometimes acting violently. She recalled an incident in which he threw a trash can at her, and in the most severe case, suddenly grabbed her head and slammed it against a wall. At the time, she was too shocked to react, never having imagined he would resort to violence.
Beyond the physical abuse, Yumi said what hurt her most was her ex-husband’s lack of respect toward her mother. She recounted how he promised to attend her mother’s birthday celebration but failed to show up until 3 a.m., arriving drunk after the event had ended. This disregard ultimately pushed her to end the marriage.
Following the divorce, Yumi experienced several failed relationships before eventually finding stability with Lam Tsz. She admitted that she initially disliked him and found him unkempt, but over time, his intelligence and persistence won her over.
Since becoming a couple, Lam Tsz has consistently expressed appreciation for Yumi and placed no demands on her. Even during disagreements, he often uses humor to defuse tension, once telling her she still looked beautiful when angry.
In recent years, Lam Tsz has been embroiled in legal troubles, yet Yumi has remained by his side. She reportedly helped cover his bail and brought meals to the police station during difficult periods. Despite occasionally poking fun at him online, Yumi has emphasized that she has never considered leaving him.
From surviving an abusive marriage to choosing a relationship rooted in loyalty and mutual support, Yumi’s story reflects a journey of resilience, self-awareness, and emotional growth.
