The upcoming film The King’s Warden has released five character posters, shedding light on a forgotten chapter of Joseon history. The film marks the first Korean feature to focus on the untold story of King Danjong, portrayed by Park Ji Hoon.

Set in 1457 at Cheongnyeongpo, the story revisits the fate of Joseon’s sixth king, who ascended the throne at just 12 years old before being overthrown by his uncle, Grand Prince Suyang. Exiled to a remote village in Yeongwol, Danjong met a tragic end far from the palace. Rather than centering solely on political struggle, the film turns its attention to the quiet exile site where the fallen king encounters ordinary lives and unexpected bonds.

Yoo Hae Jin stars as Eom Heung Do, the village chief of Gwangcheonggol. Once hopeful that hosting high-ranking exiles might revive his struggling village, he is abruptly confronted with the arrival of a dethroned former king. His poster reflects a man juggling responsibility, pragmatism, and an understated warmth. Yoo Hae Jin shared that he spent considerable time contemplating the emotional state of his character within that historical moment.

Park Ji Hoon’s Yi Hong Wi, the personal name of King Danjong, appears alone in royal robes, his sorrowful gaze capturing the vulnerability of a boy stripped of power and certainty. Park Ji Hoon noted that he worked carefully to understand the inner world of a young king facing loss beyond his comprehension.

Yoo Ji Tae brings a chilling presence as Han Myeong Hoe, the architect of the Gyeyu Coup. His character not only orchestrates Danjong’s exile but continues to monitor him, embodying the oppressive force of power that lingers even after victory.

Jeon Mi Do portrays court lady Mae Hwa, who has cared for Danjong since his earliest childhood and remains steadfastly by his side in exile. Her quiet resilience and loyalty stand in stark contrast to the political machinations surrounding them.

Lee Jun Hyuk appears as Grand Prince Geumseong, Danjong’s uncle who seeks to restore his nephew to the throne. Armed and resolute, his image signals determination driven by both conviction and familial bond.

By focusing on those history barely remembers, The King’s Warden reframes a familiar tragedy through human relationships and moral choices. The film is scheduled for theatrical release on February 4, 2026.
