A major new Korean historical action film is officially in the works. The Sword: A Legend of the Red Wolf has confirmed its main cast, featuring Park Bo Gum, Joo Won, Jung Jae Young, Lee Sun Bin, and BIBI, signaling an ambitious large-scale production.

Set in the turbulent aftermath of Goguryeo’s collapse, the film follows a man who loses his memory and is reduced to slavery before entering a brutal tournament centered on a legendary sword. As he fights to survive, he gradually rediscovers his identity and destiny. The project is helmed by director Kim Han Min, known for War of the Arrows, a film praised for its intense action and historical atmosphere.
Park Bo Gum stars as Chil Seong, an amnesiac warrior. His character arc spans from raw survival as a slave gladiator to a heroic awakening as the legendary figure known as the “Red Wolf.” The role demands both physical intensity and emotional depth, marking a significant challenge and potential milestone in Park Bo Gum’s film career.
Joo Won plays Gyepil Haryeok, Chil Seong’s formidable rival. Representing the Göktürks in the tournament, Gyepil Haryeok is portrayed as a cold, disciplined warrior whose clashes with Chil Seong drive much of the film’s central conflict.
Jung Jae Young takes on the role of Heuk Su Gang, leader of the Goguryeo restoration force known as the Damul Army. Acting as both mentor and strategist, he guides Chil Seong’s growth while secretly leading efforts to revive the fallen kingdom. Lee Sun Bin appears as Maya, a member of the resistance, while BIBI plays In Jeong, Heuk Su Gang’s daughter, adding emotional and narrative layers to the story.
Director Kim Han Min explained that while War of the Arrows highlighted the speed and spirit of the bow, The Sword: A Legend of the Red Wolf aims to capture the weight and sharpness of the sword, cutting through the chaos of a fallen era. He expressed hopes that the film will introduce a new Korean action hero rooted in Goguryeo history to audiences worldwide.
Production is set to begin soon, with the film targeting a summer 2027 release.
