The upcoming film SUKIYAKI Ue wo Muite Arukou, starring Okada Junichi, has announced the addition of Matsuzaka Tori and Nakano Taiga to its cast, along with a confirmed release date of December 25. With its full lineup revealed, the film is drawing attention as a cinematic portrayal of a pivotal chapter in Japan’s music history.

Directed by Zeze Takahisa—known for works such as The Boy and the Dog, The 8-Year Engagement, From Lageri with Love, and Paradise—the film explores the life of renowned jazz pianist and composer Nakamura Hachidai. Through a calm and humanistic lens, it traces the emotional highs and lows of his artistic journey.

The story centers on Nakamura’s youth and his close friendship with two key figures of the era, collectively known as the “Roku Hachi Kyu Trio” (the 689 Trio). This group consisted of Nakamura Hachidai, lyricist Ei Rokusuke, and singer-actor Sakamoto Kyu. Together, they formed a creative partnership that would leave a lasting mark on Japanese popular music.

Okada Junichi portrays Nakamura Hachidai, depicting his struggles and aspirations as both a musician and an individual. Matsuzaka Tori takes on the role of Ei Rokusuke, while Nakano Taiga plays Sakamoto Kyu, a cultural icon of the Showa era. Their performances aim to capture the bond and shared passion that fueled their creative achievements.

At the heart of the film is the iconic song “Ue wo Muite Arukou,” internationally known as “Sukiyaki.” By retracing the song’s creation and the relationships behind it, SUKIYAKI Ue wo Muite Arukou offers a reflective look at friendship, creativity, and the enduring power of music across generations.
