The Chinese drama 《野狗骨頭》 – Wild Dog Bones, starring Song Weilong and Zhang Jingyi, is steadily moving toward release with its original episode count unchanged. According to recent reports, the series will proceed to streaming with all 32 episodes intact, as initially approved at the time it received its filming license.

Wild Dog Bones obtained official filming approval in February last year and began production in Guangdong Province in May. Filming wrapped in September, and the drama entered a waiting period earlier this year. At present, industry observers consider a summer release to be the most likely scenario, positioning the series as a potential highlight of the upcoming seasonal lineup.

In an environment where many Chinese dramas undergo episode reductions or structural adjustments before release, Wild Dog Bones stands out for maintaining its originally approved length from start to finish. This consistency has led to speculation that the drama will be released in a complete form, preserving its narrative integrity and original pacing.

The casting has further amplified anticipation. Zhang Jingyi saw a sharp rise in popularity last year following her appearance in the historical drama Legend of Zanghai, while Song Weilong achieved significant success this year with You Are My Glory Like the Sun, co-starring Zhao Jinmai, which emerged as one of the year’s most talked-about series. Their first on-screen collaboration has drawn considerable attention from both fans and industry watchers.

Adapted from a novel of the same name, Wild Dog Bones is set in the 1990s and centers on Chen Yi (played by Song Weilong) and Miao Jing (played by Zhang Jingyi), who become siblings through their parents’ remarriage. After being torn apart by a pivotal incident, the two reunite years later under drastically changed circumstances. Miao Jing becomes entangled with a smuggling organization through her work in auditing, prompting Chen Yi to infiltrate the group himself and cooperate with police investigations in an effort to protect her. As they uncover the truth, their bond deepens amid danger and moral conflict.

The premise of “non-blood-related siblings forming a forbidden emotional connection within the margins of society” sparked debate from the project’s earliest announcement. Additional attention has been directed toward the actors’ physical transformations for their roles. Song Weilong reportedly reduced his body fat to embody a rougher, more feral presence befitting the “wild dog” archetype, while Zhang Jingyi also lost weight to convey Miao Jing’s vulnerability and fragility.

With its episode count secured and release window coming into focus, Wild Dog Bones continues to gain momentum. Combining a provocative narrative, a high-profile cast, and deliberate character preparation, the drama is shaping up to be one of the most closely watched Chinese series of the summer season.
