Chinese fantasy period drama 月鳞绮纪- Moon Scale Chronicles has found another unexpected way to dominate online conversation—this time through its costumes.
The series, which premiered in April and quickly became one of the season’s most talked-about fantasy dramas, recently drew fresh attention after several outfits worn by lead actress Ju Jingyi were put up for sale and sold out almost immediately despite their premium prices.
According to reports, eight costumes worn by Ju Jingyi in the drama were recently listed through an online auction sale.
Even though bidding started at 30,000 yuan (approximately $4,100) per outfit, all eight pieces were snapped up within a short period of time.
The final total reportedly reached 1.04 million yuan (roughly $143,000), highlighting both the drama’s popularity and the strong demand surrounding its visual design.
Since its release in April, 月鳞绮纪- Moon Scale Chronicles has performed strongly on social media, becoming one of this spring’s biggest fantasy hits.
The drama also reportedly boosted Ju Jingyi’s popularity, with her follower count increasing by around 700,000 across major social media platforms following the show’s release.
Lavish costumes have long been one of the defining attractions of Chinese historical and fantasy dramas.
However, producing highly detailed wardrobe pieces requires enormous amounts of time, craftsmanship, and money.
Because of those costs, outfits are often modified and reused in future productions.
That is reportedly not the case here.
Director and writer Guo Jingming, who is also known for My Journey to You, has developed a reputation for preserving costumes from his productions rather than reselling them to other drama teams.
Instead, some of those outfits are occasionally made available directly to fans.
In Moon Scale Chronicles, Ju Jingyi reportedly wore a total of 34 costumes throughout the series.
One of the most talked-about pieces was her elaborate wedding costume, which featured nearly 3,000 individually sewn scales.
The finished outfit reportedly weighed around 18 kilograms, showcasing the extraordinary craftsmanship behind the design.
The drama’s wardrobe has been widely praised online, with many viewers calling it a stunning representation of traditional Eastern aesthetics.
Fans were also impressed that each auctioned costume reportedly included detailed information about exactly which episode it appeared in.
That extra attention to detail further increased interest among collectors.
Given the craftsmanship involved, many viewers said the high prices felt justified.
For some audiences, the costumes have become just as memorable as Moon Scale Chronicles itself.
