The Chinese music industry saw a major generational shift this week as rising mainland singer Shan Yichun emerged as one of the biggest names on the nomination list for the 37th Golden Melody Awards.

On May 13, the official nominations for this year’s ceremony were unveiled, with the 24-year-old singer earning five major nominations for her album Pure Little Sister (纯妹妹), including Best Mandarin Female Singer and Album of the Year.

With the achievement, Shan Yichun became the first mainland Chinese female singer born after 2000 to be nominated for the prestigious Best Mandarin Female Singer award, instantly making her one of the most closely watched artists of this year’s ceremony.

Her nomination is already being described by many industry observers as a symbolic “breakthrough moment” for mainland younger-generation singers at the Golden Melody Awards. Notably, she is the first mainland female singer since Na Ying in 1999 to seriously contend for the title of Mandarin female vocalist at the awards, ending years of online discussion claiming the ceremony favored Taiwanese artists over mainland performers.

This year’s Best Mandarin Female Singer category has been widely described as exceptionally competitive, with Shan Yichun facing established top-tier artists including Jolin Tsai and Julia Peng.

According to comments reportedly shared by members of the judging panel, one of the reasons Pure Little Sister stood out was the way Shan Yichun blended her vocals directly into the emotional structure of the music itself. Judges praised the album’s artistic cohesion and described her performance as unusually mature for someone of her age.

However, beyond the awards themselves, another topic is beginning to attract even greater attention — reports that Shan Yichun’s team is actively discussing plans for a large-scale Hong Kong concert at Kai Tak Sports Park.

Industry insiders claim Hong Kong has been placed high on the priority list for her upcoming overseas solo tour, with the newly opened Kai Tak venue being considered as a possible first stop outside mainland China.

The location would carry enormous symbolic weight.

Kai Tak Sports Park has quickly become Hong Kong’s most high-profile large-scale performance venue, already hosting several major international and Asian concert productions. For a younger mainland artist like Shan Yichun, holding an overseas opening concert there would signal not only growing commercial confidence, but also recognition of her rising position within the broader Mandarin music market.

Sources also suggest that Shan Yichun herself is particularly interested in performing in Hong Kong because of the city’s historical role as a bridge within Chinese-language pop culture.

What makes the speculation even more significant is the possible timing. If the concert proceeds in late 2026 or early 2027, it could align closely with the 30th anniversary of Hong Kong’s return to China in 2027.

As one of the most prominent younger-generation mainland singers, Shan Yichun performing in Hong Kong during that period would likely carry cultural symbolism beyond a standard commercial concert. Many observers are already framing the potential event as a reflection of growing cultural exchange and integration between younger mainland and Hong Kong entertainment industries.

Following the Golden Melody nominations, Shan Yichun’s commercial value has also seen another noticeable surge. Her mainland concert tour performances have reportedly continued selling strongly, and if the Hong Kong concert is officially confirmed, many fans expect an intense rush for tickets.

Fan communities in Hong Kong have already started organizing support campaigns online, urging organizers to announce the concert plans as soon as possible.

The 37th Golden Melody Awards ceremony will take place on June 27 at the Taipei Arena. Regardless of whether Shan Yichun ultimately wins Best Mandarin Female Singer, the possibility of her “Kai Tak debut” has already become one of the most anticipated developments in the Chinese-language concert market this year.
