From Wang Churan to Zhao Lusi: Why China’s Post-95 Actresses Are Dominating the New Beauty Era

The post-95 generation of Chinese actresses has recently become one of the most talked-about forces in the entertainment industry. From the cold, elegant aura of Wang Churan in Are You the One (柳舟记) to the lively intelligence Guan Xiaotong displayed in Romance in the Alley (小巷人家), a new wave of young actresses is reshaping the public’s idea of screen beauty through a mix of visuals, charisma, and increasingly mature performances.

What makes this generation especially fascinating is that their appeal no longer follows a single standard. Some stand out through striking bone structure, others through atmosphere, personality, or emotional presence onscreen. Together, they have created what many viewers now describe as a true “golden age” of diverse female beauty in Chinese entertainment.

Among them, Wang Churan is often considered one of the clearest examples of a modern “bone-structure beauty.” Born in 1999, she possesses sharply defined facial features that still retain softness and elegance. Her almond-shaped eyes naturally carry a slightly seductive quality, while her smile adds warmth beneath her otherwise cool appearance.

In The Longest Promise (玉骨遥), her portrayal of Bai Xuelu especially intensified discussion surrounding her visuals. Dressed in flowing white robes against snowy scenery, she gave many viewers the impression of someone stepping directly out of a classical Chinese painting. Audiences frequently commented on the contrast in her image — calm and distant when expressionless, yet unexpectedly sweet once she smiles. That duality has helped solidify her place as one of the standout visual figures in recent costume dramas.

Meanwhile, Guan Xiaotong has gradually shed her long-standing “national daughter” image and evolved into a far more mature screen presence. Her height and long-legged silhouette already make her naturally eye-catching at public events, but what has changed most in recent years is the perception of her acting and overall aura.

Through projects like Twenty Your Life On (二十不惑) and Romance in the Alley (小巷人家), Guan Xiaotong has slowly moved away from earlier criticism surrounding inconsistent project choices. Many viewers now feel she has entered a more stable phase both stylistically and professionally. Her recent red carpet appearances have also drawn attention for abandoning heavily stylized “internet celebrity” aesthetics in favor of cleaner, more elegant fashion choices, leading many netizens to remark that she has finally found a style truly suited to her.

If Wang Churan and Guan Xiaotong represent colder or more mature beauty archetypes, then Esther Yu and Zhao Lusi remain among the strongest representatives of the “sweet girl” category.

Esther Yu became massively popular through Love Between Fairy and Devil (苍兰诀), where her role as Xiao Lanhua highlighted the naturally youthful charm that has become central to her public image. Her rounded facial features, playful personality, and energetic off-screen presence have helped her build a highly loyal fanbase, even as debates continue online about her makeup styling and heavily curated fashion image.

Similarly, Zhao Lusi has established herself as one of the defining faces of approachable, warm-hearted female leads. With her soft oval face and naturally healing smile, she often embodies the “girl-next-door” image that audiences find emotionally comforting. Her performance as Cheng Shaoshang in Love Like the Galaxy (星汉灿烂) further strengthened that reputation, with many viewers praising the role for feeling lively and natural rather than overly manufactured.

Like many top actresses of her generation, Zhao Lusi has also faced ongoing appearance debates online, with some critics questioning whether her visuals fit traditional “stunning beauty” standards. Yet those discussions have done little to weaken her popularity or commercial influence.

At the same time, actresses such as Tian Xiwei, Zhou Ye, and Song Zu’er continue adding even more variety to the post-95 landscape. Tian Xiwei is often associated with bright sweetness and youthful energy, Zhou Ye with cool and cinematic elegance, while Song Zu’er carries a naturally lively and expressive presence that makes her especially memorable onscreen.

What makes this generation interesting is that no single face completely defines it.

Some actresses attract attention immediately through classical beauty and facial structure. Others stand out through atmosphere, emotional realism, or distinctive personalities. And increasingly, audiences are also beginning to value acting ability alongside appearance, seeing beauty less as a fixed hierarchy and more as an extension of individuality and screen presence.

Perhaps that is why discussions around the “top visual” among post-95 actresses never truly end. The answer changes depending on personal taste, drama roles, styling, and even emotional connection with audiences.

In today’s Chinese entertainment industry, beauty no longer belongs to just one mold — and the post-95 actresses may be the clearest reflection of that shift.
