The upcoming film Street Kingdom has released its first teaser, drawing attention from both film audiences and music culture enthusiasts. The film stars Mineta Kazunobu of GING NANG BOYZ and Wakaba Ryuya, and marks the first directorial work in ten years by actor Taguchi Tomorowo, known for Piece of Cake and Shikisoku Zenereishon. The screenplay is written by acclaimed writer Kudo Kankuro, a collaboration that has heightened anticipation since the project was announced.

Based on a true story, Street Kingdom centers on a group of young people who chose to create their own music outside the control of major record labels. The movement they sparked later became known as “Tokyo Rockers,” opening a gap in an industry long dominated by large corporations and giving rise to what would eventually be recognized as Japan’s indie music scene.

Set in 1978, the story follows Yuichi, a young photographer from the countryside who moves to Tokyo after hearing a Sex Pistols song on the radio by chance. Inspired, he seeks out a live music venue after reading about it in an underground rock magazine called Rockin’ Doll. There, he encounters Tokage, a band led by vocalist Momo, whose raw and electrifying performance compels him to keep shooting photographs. Yuichi is soon invited to become Tokage’s official live photographer, gradually immersing himself in the band’s world and the underground music scene surrounding them.

As Tokage’s music begins to resonate with young audiences, the movement grows beyond a subculture, subtly reshaping the landscape of Japanese rock music. Through the lens of a photographer, the film weaves together personal journeys and historical change, portraying a pivotal moment defined by creative freedom, youthful defiance, and cultural transformation.

In addition to the leading cast, the film features a strong ensemble including Yoshioka Riho, Nakano Taiga, Mamiya Shotaro, Omori Nao, Nakamura Shido, and Nakajima Sena. Supporting roles are played by Kanno Misuzu, Hamano Kenta, Morioka Ryu, Yamagishi Mondo, Maggy, Yonemura Ryotaro, Matsuura Yuya, and Watanabe Daichi, forming a richly layered portrayal of the era.

Street Kingdom is scheduled for theatrical release in Japan on March 27, 2026. More than a music film, it stands as a cinematic tribute to independent spirit and the voices that emerged from the margins of a changing time.
