As the Spring Festival holiday concludes, audience attention is gradually returning to long-form video platforms, bringing a modest rebound to the overall drama market. Traditionally, the spring season has been regarded as an industry “off-season,” often dominated by urban family dramas and a limited number of period romances targeting white-collar viewers. In recent years, however, structural shifts in both supply and demand have reshaped the landscape.

On the production side, many mid-tier projects have been halted, leaving the market increasingly driven by large-scale, high-profile titles that stand a stronger chance of breaking through. On the demand side, audience segmentation has expanded, allowing more diverse genres to perform well within niche verticals. As a result, costume dramas and suspense series are now entering the spring schedule in greater numbers.

Among the most anticipated March releases is Zhu Yu, starring Zhang Linghe and Tian Xiwei. Adapted from the novel of the same name by Tuanzi Laixi, Zhu Yu tells the story of fallen marquis Xie Zheng, portrayed by Zhang Linghe, who marries into a butcher’s family and forms a contract marriage with Fan Changyu, played by Tian Xiwei. Their relationship gradually evolves from reluctant partners to comrades fighting side by side. Directed by Zeng Qingjie, known for the well-received Ninefold Purple, Zhu Yu has already surpassed five million combined reservations across two platforms. The drama’s original soundtrack has further elevated expectations, with the theme song composed and performed by JJ Lin and lyrics written by Vincent Fang.

Another major title drawing attention is Zhen Niang Zhuan, led by Yang Zi and Han Dongjun. Originally titled Jia Ye, the series is set during the Jiajing era of the Ming dynasty and centers on Li Zhen, the youngest daughter of a Huizhou ink-making family. Portrayed by Yang Zi, Li Zhen challenges the long-standing rule of “passing the craft to sons but not daughters” and rises from adversity to become the head of the family business, highlighting themes of cultural heritage and personal resilience. Filmed on location in Huangshan, Anhui, and Wuyuan, Jiangxi, Zhen Niang Zhuan has surpassed three million reservations and has received positive feedback for its production quality following the release of its trailer.

Also on the upcoming slate is White Day Lantern, starring Dilraba Dilmurat and Chen Feiyu. Adapted from Li Qingran’s novel and formerly titled Mu Xu Ci, the project has been positioned by its platform as a “Super S+” production, with reservations exceeding three million.

Beyond high-profile costume dramas, the March lineup spans suspense, period, urban romance, and legal genres. In the suspense category, Her Blazing Flame stars Ma Sichun and Ning Li and focuses on contemporary women’s struggles intertwined with criminal investigation. Unfathomable, led by Liu Ye and Nie Yuan, revolves around a 28-year-old credit union robbery case, exploring the survival realities of migrant workers. The Invisible Name, directed by Yang Yang and starring Ni Ni, Yan Ni, and Liu Yase, presents a female-driven emotional suspense narrative. Meanwhile, When I Awake adapts Ding Mo’s novel and stars Jing Tian and Zhang Xincheng.

Urban romance is represented by Unofficial Romance, starring Cai Wenjing and Chen Jingke, adapted from the novel Half-Ripe and incorporating fantasy time-travel elements. In the realm of period and realistic storytelling, Winter Turns to Spring, directed by Zheng Xiaolong and Li Ang and starring Bai Yu and Zhang Ruonan, focuses on young artists pursuing dreams in 1990s Beijing. My Mountains and Seas, led by Tan Songyun, traces the 30-year journey of a migrant worker who becomes the founder of a listed company, adapted from Liang Xiaosheng’s novel Me and My Fate. The contemporary legal drama Family Court stars Gong Jun and Ren Min.

With multiple heavyweight projects such as Zhu Yu and Zhen Niang Zhuan poised for release, March presents a lineup rich in both scale and variety. Whether one of these titles can generate strong word-of-mouth momentum and trigger a broader market revival remains to be seen, as the industry continues to seek a meaningful recovery following recent contraction.
