Actor Jang Dong Yoon is set to expand his career into filmmaking with the release of his first feature-length directorial project, Nuruk. According to distributor Roadshow Plus, Nuruk will premiere exclusively in Megabox theaters on April 15, marking a significant milestone for Jang Dong Yoon as he transitions from actor to director.
As Jang Dong Yoon’s feature debut, Nuruk tells the story of Dasul, an 18-year-old girl from a family that runs a traditional brewery. Known for her love of makgeolli, Dasul begins to notice a subtle but meaningful change in its taste. This observation leads her on a journey to uncover the disappearance of nuruk, the essential fermentation ingredient behind the rice wine. Through this premise, Nuruk blends coming-of-age elements with a culturally rooted narrative, highlighting both personal growth and traditional craftsmanship.

Even before its official release, Nuruk has drawn attention within the festival circuit. The film has been invited to several major domestic events, including the Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival, the Seoul Independent Film Festival, and the Ulju Mountain Film Festival. These selections have positioned Nuruk as a noteworthy project within the independent film scene. Supporting the production, director Lee Tae Dong, known for works such as Damn Good Company and Mr. Kang, participated as a producer, while actors Kim Seung Yoon, Song Ji Hyuk, and Park Myung Hoon appear in the film.
The anticipation surrounding Nuruk is further heightened by Jang Dong Yoon’s earlier work behind the camera. In 2023, he directed the short film Please Be My Ear, a self-funded project that ran for 21 minutes. Though modest in scale, the film reflected Jang Dong Yoon’s long-standing interest in storytelling, an interest that began during his middle and high school years when he first explored screenwriting. This background suggests that Nuruk is not a sudden shift, but rather a continuation of a sustained creative pursuit.

The recently released teaser poster for Nuruk has also attracted attention. Featuring the line, “Will I be able to find my world again?”, it shows protagonist Dasul holding a bottle of makgeolli while gazing ahead in quiet contemplation. The contrast between her school uniform and the adult-associated drink creates a subtle tension, hinting at unexpected developments within the story and reinforcing the film’s thematic duality.
While widely recognized for his acting, Jang Dong Yoon’s path into the entertainment industry has been notably unconventional. During his time at Hanyang University, he gained public attention after helping apprehend a convenience store robber, an incident that led to his discovery by an agency. Since then, Jang Dong Yoon has built a steady acting career, appearing in dramas such as Daily Dose of Sunshine, Like Flowers in Sand, The Tale of Nokdu, and Queen Mantis, as well as films including Beautiful Days and Project Wolf Hunting.
With Nuruk, Jang Dong Yoon takes a new step in his career, moving behind the camera while continuing to build on his experience as a performer. As the release approaches, Nuruk is positioned as both a personal and professional milestone, reflecting a creative direction that extends beyond acting.
