SBS’s upcoming romantic comedy My Royal Nemesis has released new stills, offering a first look at Lim Ji Yeon in a dual-layered role that bridges past and present.
The drama follows Shin Seo Ri, a struggling modern-day actress who becomes possessed by the spirit of Kang Dan Shim, a notorious villainess from the Joseon era. Opposite her, Heo Nam Jun plays Cha Se Gye, a cold and calculating chaebol heir often described as a “product of capitalism.”

The newly revealed stills highlight the contrast at the heart of the character. In one set of images, Lim Ji Yeon appears visibly disoriented, her widened eyes reflecting confusion as she confronts an unfamiliar modern environment. Everyday interactions—such as physical gestures from others—become sources of shock, emphasizing the dislocation of a Joseon-era figure suddenly placed in contemporary Korea.
In contrast, another still captures her after the villainess persona resurfaces. Her expression sharpens, her gaze turns intense, and her presence becomes commanding. This shift underscores the character’s duality: the collision between a modern woman’s vulnerability and the ruthless authority of a historical antagonist.
The narrative is expected to build on this tension, combining comedic situations arising from cultural and temporal dissonance with a more character-driven exploration of identity. The question at the center of the story is not only how Kang Dan Shim adapts to the 21st century, but also how her presence reshapes Shin Seo Ri’s life.
By merging body-swap elements with time-displacement, My Royal Nemesis positions itself within a hybrid genre that balances romance, comedy, and fantasy. The success of the series will likely depend on how effectively it maintains this tonal balance while developing its central relationship.
My Royal Nemesis is scheduled to premiere on May 8 at 9:50 p.m. KST.
