SBS is expanding its variety lineup with an unconventional new travel program, bringing together an unexpected mix of celebrities for a spiritual journey across India.
On April 22, the network confirmed that its upcoming road variety show Sunim Sonim Soul Trip in India will premiere in May. The title plays on the Korean words “sunim,” meaning Buddhist monk, and “sonim,” meaning guest—reflecting the show’s concept of combining spiritual reflection with travel experiences.
At the center of the program is Pomnyun Sunim, widely regarded as one of South Korea’s most respected Buddhist figures and often referred to as the nation’s mentor. The show will explore part of his 34-year pilgrimage journey to sacred sites across India, marking his first-ever appearance in a road variety format.

A Different Side of Pomnyun Sunim
While Pomnyun Sunim is best known for his teachings and public lectures, the show promises to reveal a more candid side of him as he navigates unpredictable travel experiences.
From riding rickshaws to eating street food and adapting to unexpected situations, the monk reportedly embraces the chaos of variety television with humor. At one point during filming, he even joked that “variety shows are harder than spiritual practice.”
A Unique Cast Lineup
Joining him on the journey is a diverse group of guests, including entertainer Noh Hong Chul, actor Lee Sang Yoon, actress Lee Joo Bin, actor Lee Ki Taek, and Woochan, the youngest member of ALLDAY PROJECT.
Notably, Lee Joo Bin reportedly canceled a planned trip to New York in order to join the program, highlighting the project’s unique appeal.
Exploring a Different Side of India
Rather than focusing on familiar tourist attractions, the show aims to present a more grounded view of India.
The cast will visit locations rarely featured on Korean television, including tributaries of the Ganges River, crowded local market streets, and a remote school personally established by Pomnyun Sunim more than three decades ago.
By highlighting lesser-seen areas and everyday experiences, the show hopes to capture India’s raw energy beyond the polished format of traditional travel programs.
With its unusual mix of spirituality, travel, and variety entertainment, Sunim Sonim Soul Trip in India is shaping up to be one of SBS’s more distinctive new releases this year.
The show is scheduled to premiere in May.
