Upcoming Chinese drama 《大梦想家》- The Dream Chaser is already attracting attention for its grounded storyline and emotionally realistic approach to young adulthood.

The 24-episode series is adapted from Xinghe Fuyou’s novel of the same name and will be directed by Guo Zengyou, with Shen Yue and Wu Hankun leading the cast.

For many viewers, the project feels like a natural return to familiar territory for Shen Yue, who built much of her popularity through youth romance dramas.

This time, she plays Xia Xia, a young woman who earns admission to Nanda University’s law school but quickly finds herself facing harsh financial reality.

After her stepfather refuses to pay her tuition fees, Xia Xia is forced to support herself by juggling part-time jobs while trying to continue her education.

Her life intersects with Xie Huai, played by Wu Hankun, who is dealing with struggles of his own.

He works multiple jobs to pay for his mother’s medical treatment and has been avoiding his studies due to unresolved psychological trauma.

The two first meet through a workplace conflict during a part-time job.

Their relationship begins with frustration and mutual dislike, but that tension gradually evolves as they realize they are both fighting difficult battles in life.

Xia Xia helps Xie Huai return to his studies by tutoring him and encouraging him to confront his fears.

In return, Xie Huai becomes a source of support as Xia Xia faces ongoing financial pressure and family challenges.

Their romance, however, does not follow a smooth path.

Before graduation, Xie Huai’s mother’s condition worsens, forcing him to leave the country for treatment.

The couple is separated for five years.

When they reunite years later, both have transformed.

Xia Xia has become a law firm partner, while Xie Huai has emerged as a rising lawyer.

Although they now appear to be workplace rivals, unresolved feelings and old misunderstandings quickly resurface.

The casting of Shen Yue as Xia Xia feels particularly fitting.

Her natural, approachable screen presence makes it easy to believe her as a hardworking law student trying to survive difficult circumstances.

The appeal is less about dramatic transformation and more about how naturally she fits the emotional tone of the character.

Wu Hankun faces a bigger challenge with Xie Huai.

His previous performance in Be Passionately in Love earned positive reactions, but this role demands far more emotional range.

He must portray both a struggling young man avoiding his responsibilities and a mature professional shaped by past trauma.

That character progression could become one of the drama’s biggest tests.

Early behind-the-scenes photos suggest the two leads have visible chemistry, though audiences will likely wait until the full series airs before making final judgments.

Supporting actors including Fan Shuaiqi and Chen Shujun are also expected to bring additional energy to the broader campus storyline.

What makes The Dream Chaser stand out is its attempt to remain emotionally grounded.

Family conflict, financial hardship, insecurity among low-income students, and the painful realities of post-graduation separation are all themes many young viewers may find deeply relatable.

Combined with a “campus first love meets long-awaited reunion” storyline, the drama is tapping into a formula that continues to resonate strongly with audiences.

That said, the series does face some risks.

Youth dramas often struggle with pacing.

If the early episodes focus too heavily on hardship without balancing those moments with enough warmth and emotional healing, viewers may find the story emotionally exhausting.

And because the drama does not rely on fantasy elements or high-stakes thriller twists, its success will likely depend entirely on whether its emotional details feel authentic.

If those details land, The Dream Chaser could become one of the more relatable youth dramas of the year.
