Over the past month, Hu Yitian’s discussion levels have noticeably started rising again, largely because promotional material for his new drama Genius Girlfriend (天才女友) has begun circulating more heavily online. With trailers and filming previews gradually being released, many viewers now see the project as his major comeback work following a relatively quiet period in his career.

In the drama, Hu Yitian stars opposite Tian Xiwei in a story built around the increasingly popular “reunion romance” structure that follows characters from their school years into adulthood. He plays Jiang Yubai, another highly intelligent academic-type character — a role category he has always handled comfortably — but this time the character carries a far more mature atmosphere compared to the youthful image he projected during A Love So Beautiful (致我们单纯的小美好).

After the newest trailer was released in April, discussions surrounding the chemistry between the two leads quickly increased. Several emotionally intimate scenes, particularly moments involving reunion eye contact and casual gestures like drying hair, spread widely online and generated strong reactions from viewers who felt the pairing unexpectedly worked well together.

In many ways, however, the attention surrounding Genius Girlfriend (天才女友) is also tied to the somewhat uncertain period Hu Yitian experienced over the past two years.

For quite some time, online discussions frequently questioned whether he had partially stepped away from the industry altogether. At one point, “673 days without joining a production” even became a trending topic among entertainment watchers. Because of that, the official launch of Genius Girlfriend (天才女友) felt less like an ordinary casting announcement and more like a signal that his acting career was finally returning to a more active rhythm.

At the same time, public perception of Hu Yitian has clearly evolved compared to the peak of his early popularity.

When he first exploded through A Love So Beautiful (致我们单纯的小美好), his image was extremely straightforward: the cold but gentle campus heartthrob, the idealized first-love senior figure that dominated youth romance dramas at the time. But entertainment trends have changed significantly since then. The market today no longer favors purely “cold school prince” archetypes in the same way it once did, which means his current return carries different expectations.

Now, audiences are paying closer attention to whether he can successfully transition into more mature urban-romance territory rather than simply recreating his earlier image.

Interestingly, Blossoms in Adversity (惜花芷) also played an important role in helping stabilize his reputation.

Before the drama aired, many viewers doubted whether Hu Yitian suited costume dramas at all. Yet once the series premiered, the overall reception turned out stronger than expected, and his portrayal of Gu Yanxi helped remind audiences that he was not limited solely to modern campus romance roles. While the performance may not have completely transformed his industry position overnight, it did expand public perception of what kinds of characters he could potentially carry.

At this stage, Hu Yitian no longer feels like the type of actor aggressively chasing traffic dominance or constant trending topics.

Instead, he increasingly resembles a more stable platform-oriented male lead — someone who may not dominate social media every day, but still holds consistent value within the romance-drama market. His popularity now feels quieter, but perhaps more sustainable. Platforms and production companies still clearly see demand for him, especially within emotionally driven modern dramas that require a restrained and visually polished male lead presence.

Whether Genius Girlfriend (天才女友) ultimately becomes a major breakout success remains uncertain, but it already appears to be repositioning Hu Yitian into a different phase of his career — less dependent on fleeting idol-drama hype, and more focused on steady long-term visibility within the mainstream drama market.
